Day 25, September 9, Hole n the Rock & Dinner Cruise

Decided to take a driving tour today. First stop was "Hole 'n the Rock", which is a 14-room home excavated from solid sandstone by Albert & Gladys Christensen beginning in the early 1940s and continuing for 20 years. Our tour of the 5000 sq ft home was incredible (sorry, no photography allowed), but you can see the windows & doors in the photo.

Next, we took the La Sal Mountain Loop Road,
took us up a winding mountain road to 8300ft
before  heading back down. There were spectacular and contrasting views of the desert floor and the mountain range,
We even encountered cows wandering over the road!

We followed the winding road through Castle Valley. then on to the monumental rock spires of Fisher Towers which has been used for many movies and TV commercials.

After a rest back at the campground, we went for a dinner/boat trip on the Colorado River. http://www.canyonlandsbynight.com/ Click on the "Photo Gallery".
After a delicious Cowboy-style Dutch Oven dinner, we boarded a large (144 passenger) theatre-style boat and headed up the river with excellent commentary from the guide. Once completely dark, the canyon walls are illuminated by 40,000 watts, creating a choreographed sound & light show. Unfortunately, we did experience a little of te rare southern Utah rain, along with some thunder & lightening, which just added to the light show!
