Day 19, Durango to Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

We are booked on the coach bus trip from Durango to Silverton this morning, then returning on the train this afternoon. http://www.durangotrain.com/

Off we went, travelling the "Million Dollar Highway" Hwy 550, which runs 75 miles north from Durango. Drove past the cliffs where Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid  was filmed. The highway is VERY close to the edge of the mountain, with no guard rails. Guard rails would make it more difficult to push the 40 feet of snow off the road in winter!
After arriving in Silverton, we strolled through the town for 3 hours, the girls popping in & out of every shop and the guys occupying the "husband benches", watching the parade of motorcycles. Unbeknownst to us, there is a huge motorcycle rally this weekend (similar to the Sturgis Rally that we ran in to in South Dakota in 2007 - why does this always happen to us???) They are expecting 20,000 cyclists.

Boarded the train for an awesome trip back, through 14,000ft mountains,

Note: the coal-fired engines emit cinders & soot. (which they did!)
