Saturday, January 26, moving to Dade City

The morning started out clear and 8.6C (47F) as we packed up.

It warmed up to 14C (57.2F) by the time we pulled out of the park at 10:00, heading south-west towards Dade City. By 10:40, we came across our first toll booth ($1.50). 9 minutes later was the second toll booth ($2.00). A brief seven minutes later the third toll booth appeared ($2.00). We went through the final booth ($3.00) four minutes later, whew!

It has been said that you should not ‘blindly’ follow a GPS, and we discovered that this is so true. Since we didn’t have a detailed map or knowledge of the area, we followed the directions from both GPS’. It brought us in on a very narrow, two lane road. However, we made it without incident and arrived at Many Mansions RV Park. When checking in, we saw the poster advertising the 16th annual Kumquat Festival today in Dade City. Also, found out that we cannot get Wi-Fi until Monday! We dropped off the RV at our site and headed straight out. www.KumquatFestival.org

The place was packed and it was sunny & a warm 24C (75.2F)! There had to be over a hundred vendors & display booths. We managed to find a couple of slices of delicious Kumquat pie.

Kumquats are often called ‘the little gold gem of the citrus family’. They have a thin, sweet peel and a zesty, somewhat tart centre.

One of the many booths was from Jim’s RV Park in Zephyrhills. It is the sister park to the one that we are in. The folks told us about the train tracks that are beside our park and that we could probably transfer to Jim’s if the trains are too loud. We decided to check out the other park.

Drove over to Zephyrhills & toured the park, stopping at the clubhouse to tap into their Wi-Fi.  Decided to stay where we are and headed back to Many Mansions. On the way, fuelled up at Sunoco at $3.759 / gallon.

The wiring for the TV is still screwed up, since we cannot receive any stations with the antenna. At least we get a radio station!

The trains run by about 100 yards from the RV. We’ll see how it goes tonight!

Friday, January 25, Quiet day

Beautiful, sunny morning, 10.7C (51F).

I spent the morning at the Clubhouse, doing the Blog.

After lunch, we walked around the park. The day has warmed up to a comfortable 23C (73.4F).

Then, it was off to fuel up at Sunoco where the cash price was $3.959 / gallon for diesel. The credit price is 6 cents a gallon more.

Ready to move on to Dade City tomorrow.

Thursday, January 24, Visit & Astronaut Hall of Fame

Packed up the computer and went to the clubhouse for internet. It is a clear morning, 8C (46.4F). Emailed some friends to line up visits. While I was still there, Pat Henning called & we arranged to meet at their place & go for lunch.

At 10:45, we were off to “The Great Outdoors RV Nature & Golf Resort” (www.tgoresort.com) in Titusville.
Wow! What a huge place! There are more tan 2500 sites ranging from permanent homes, seasonal sites and RV sites. They have a lovely winter home there and we enjoyed reminiscing about our RV adventures with MB and Wagon Trains. Next, we went for a nice lunch at the Jukebox Café, a restaurant on the property.

After a pleasant visit, we left & went to the Astronaut Hall of Fame, which was included on our Kennedy Space Centre ticket. It is a beautiful day, 22C (71.6F).

We spent the rest of the day there, until 4:30. It is very well laid out and packed with information and displays about the space program and the astronauts. We signed up to be on the next shuttle flight!

After a full day, we returned to the park at 5:15.

Wednesday, January 23, Kennedy Space Centre

Started off to be a chilly morning 9.5C (49F), but is sunny.

By 9:00, we were off to the Kennedy Space Centre Visitor Complex. It is a sunny 9C (48F). By the time we arrived at 9:28, it has warmed up to 16C (61F). Paid another $10.00 to park!

We headed straight over to the KSC Bus tour loading area, as the tours start at 10:00.
The first point of interest on the tour was the Massive Vehicle Assembly Building, which has 456 ft tall garage doors that take 45 minutes to open. It has a HUGE American flag painted on the side.
The VAB is 526 feet (160.3 m) tall, 716 feet (218.2 m) long and 518 feet (157.9 m) wide. It covers 8 acres (3 ha), and encloses 129,428,000 cubic feet (3,665,000 m3) of space.
Located on Florida's Atlantic coast, the building was constructed to withstand hurricanes and tropical storms with a foundation consisting of 30,000 cubic yards of concrete and 4,225 steel rods driven 160 feet into limestone bedrock.
The American flag painted on the building was the largest in the world when added in 1976. It is 209 feet (63.7 m) high, and 110 feet (33.5 m) wide. Each of the stars on the flag is 6 feet (1.83 m) across, the blue field is the size of a regulation basketball court, and each of the stripes is 9 feet (2.74 m) wide, the width of a standard road lane.

We were let off the bus at the Apollo/Saturn V Centre where we could tour at our leisure.

The size of the Saturn Rocket was amazing!

The displays here are awesome!

We even saw a sample of lunar basalt, estimated to be 3.7 BILLION years old.

The Apollo 14 capsule was on display.
Apollo 14 was the eighth manned mission in the US Apollo program, and the third to land on the Moon.
They launched on their nine-day mission on January 31, 1971 at 4:04:02 pm local time after a 40 minute, 2 second delay due to launch site weather restrictions, the first such delay in the Apollo program. Shepard and Mitchell made their lunar landing on February 5. During the two lunar EVAs, 42 kilograms (93 lb) of Moon rocks were collected and several surface experiments, including seismic studies, were performed. Shepard famously hit two golf balls on the lunar surface with a makeshift club he had brought from Earth. Shepard and Mitchell spent about 33 hours on the Moon, with about 9½ hours on EVA.
Shepard, Roosa, and Mitchell landed in the Pacific Ocean on February 9.

Launch Pad 39 is 3 miles away, that little dot between the trees!

At 12:00, we got back on a bus for the return trip to the Visitor Centre. There was so much to see, it was mind-boggling!

Before having lunch, we HAD to take the Shuttle Launch Experience, minding the warnings! (1053) It was awesome! One experiences the sights, sounds, feelings and excitement of a vertical launch in mankind’s most complex vehicle.
You enter the ride, taking a seat and strapping yourself in. (The rather limited backstory for the ride is that you’re flying in a special passenger module in the shuttle’s cargo bay. There’s no explanation for why you’re going to space or when you’ll come back; this is, after all, only the Shuttle Launch Experience.) Once strapped in, the module rotates into a vertical position—hence the requirement before entering the ride to put items in lockers before entering—and a condensed version of a launch follows. As a video narrated by Astronaut Charles Bolden plays, riders experience the sensations of acceleration and vibration as the shuttle lifts off and climbs towards orbit. (The ride tries to interject a bit of additional drama into the experience with a minor emergency during ascent, but that does little to heighten the experience since there’s nothing riders can do about it and the problem is resolved within moments.) Once the shuttle reaches orbit, the cabin rotates back to its original position, which can give you a momentary, illusory sensation of weightlessness. And, like any good theme park ride, you exit by passing through a gift shop.

This is a 9-ton granite constellation sphere floating on water. Amazing!

Do you know where this is – taken from space?

  It is London, England.

After lunch, we were just in time for the showing of IMAX Hubble 3D, Eye on the Universe at 1:30, which was narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio. After spending ½ hour visiting other exhibits, we watched the other IMAX film, Space Station 3D. This one was narrated by Tom Cruise.  They were both excellent and so realistic in 3D (wearing 3D glasses).

Unfortunately, the Astronaut Memorial was closed for renovations. Astronaut MemorialThe Space Mirror Memorial, designated as a national memorial by Congress and President George Bush, was dedicated in 1991. The Astronaut Memorial honors the 24 U.S. astronauts who gave their lives for space exploration. The names of the fallen astronauts from the Space Shuttle Columbia, the Space Shuttle Challenger and Apollo 1, as well as the astronauts from training and commercial airplane accidents are emblazoned on the monument’s 42-1/2-foot-high-by-50-foot-wide black granite surface as if to be projected into the heavens.

On our way back to the entrance, we toured the Rocket Garden,  which featured another full-size Saturn rocket.

Finally, after a long day, we exited the Centre at 4:30. What a fabulous day!

Tuesday, January 22

This morning is an overcast 13.3C (55F). Walked around the park, admiring the Spanish moss laden trees.

By 10:45, it was sunny and 18C (64.4F). Time to do laundry. We went in to town since there are only 2 washers & dryers in the laundry room. Also needed some groceries and Winn-Dixie is next to the Laundromat.
By 12:30, laundry was done, groceries done so it was back to the park for lunch.

Spent the afternoon in Wal-Mart, Target & Home Depot. Just looking around.

Monday, January 21, Daytona Beach

Yippee! It looks like Google has fixed my problem and I can now add pics! It will take me a while to redo posts. Be patient!

7:30 this morning was sunny and 16.5C. Went for a walk around the park and checked out the KOA next door. Looks like tight quarters there!

At 10:00, we set off for a drive north to Daytona Beach via Hwy 1. It was cloudy and 22C. Turned on to Hwy A1A at New Smyrna Beach. Turned out that the Hwy goes south along the coast and ends at the Canaveral National Seashore Visitor Information Center, with the road continuing 9km to the end.

The Canaveral National Seashore lies north of the Kennedy Space Centre. This 57,000 acre unit of the National Park Service encompasses 24 miles of unspoiled barrier beaches, shallow lagoons & dunes. Alligators, turtles, manatees and a variety of birds are among the abundant wildlife. Since ancient times, this barrier island has provided sanctuary to both people and wildlife. Many threatened animals find refuge here, including sea turtles who nest on its shores.

It happened that today, Martin Luther King Day; admission to National Parks is free. Bonus! We drove to the end of the road with very little to see but saw palmetto on either side. A few avid fishermen were trying their luck at some of the parking areas that had access to the beach, but without success. It started spitting rain and was a cold wind!

We returned to the Visitor Centre where we watched a great movie about the area.

We exited the park at 12:05, heading back north. No more rain.

Came across an interesting looking place called Captain JB’s Fish Camp Seafood Restaurant. Stopped for lunch, since it was 12:15. We enjoyed a Crabcake sandwich and Crablicious Sandwich, which was packed full of crab!

Following that pleasant diversion, we resumed heading north towards Daytona.

At 1:40, we arrived at the Daytona Chamber of Commerce under sunny skies & 20C.

We stopped at Angell & Phelps Chocolate Factory for a tour of a working factory. This 80 year old family run company makes a wide selection of delicious, fresh, high quality, handmade chocolates. We were tempted to buy some after sampling, but resisted, knowing that they wouldn’t make it home!

Next, we drove over the International Speedway Blvd. Bridge to the beach. Drove south on the firmly packed sand for 4km.

Then we headed south to visit the Ponce de Leon Lighthouse, Florida’s tallest lighthouse. This 175-foot-high lighthouse has been in service since 1887. Standing atop a 12 foot deep by 45 foot wide foundation of brick, the picturesque tower tapers inwards from its 32 foot diameter base to a 12 foot diameter top. The brick walls are eight feet thick at the base and 2 feet thick at the top. I climbed the 203 steps to the gallery deck for a panorama of the Daytona Beach area.

By 4:20, we were heading back to the park, after a full day. 20C.

Total driving distance today was 222km.

Sunday, January 20, Exploring the area

Woke up at 7:40 this morning to 16.8C and thin clouds in the sky. Went for a walk around the park then it was off to the Clubhouse for internet. Had to leave at 10:45, as they were setting up for a church service.

We decided to go for an exploration drive to Merritt Island. After crossing over the Indian River (Intracoastal Waterway) on the A. Max Brewer Bridge under sunny 22C skies, we arrived at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Information Centre. There, we walked around the informative boardwalk which displayed the native flora and fauna which included an alligator, and live oak trees covered in Spanish Moss.

Next, we went back across the bridge to Hwy 1 and south to NASA Parkway, leading to the Space Centre.

At 12:50, we arrived at the Kennedy Space Centre, paid for parking, only to discover that the entrance is $50.00 each. We decided not to go, as we only had less than 4 hours to see the whole place. We’ll return another day, early.

By 1:15, we continued back out to Hwy 1, then south to the next bridge across the Indian River again, then over the Banana River to Port Canaveral. We were surprised to see several cruise ships in port.

Carried on down the highway to Cocoa Beach, which is the surf capital. We stopped at Blockhouse Beach, across from Patrick Air force Base. I think the tide was coming in as we dodged the waves!

At 2:50, we turned west to Hwy 3 north on Merritt Island. Along the way, we saw many more ridiculously huge homes!
After a 203km drive, we arrived back at Seasons in the Sun RV Park at 4:15.

Saturday, January 19, Moving to Titusville

Today is moving day… we were packed up & ready to move on by 10:15. The sun is warm today and the temp is 16C (60.8F). We are heading south on I-95 to Titusville.

11:15 we made a brief stop at Gander Mountain, St. Augustine, looking for Columbia shoes for Marcel.

By 11:35 we were back on the road with a new pair of hiking shoes.

Passing by Daytona Beach, the temp had increased to 22C (71.6F).

Shortly after, at 12:45, it clouded over with brief periods of light rain. Fifteen minutes later, the skies cleared and the temp was 24C (75.2F). Some places say that if you don’t like the weather, wait an hour and it will change. Here, the wait is only 10 – 15 minutes!

We arrived at Seasons in the Sun RV & Motorcoach Resort . (www.seasonsinthesunrv.com ) and are booked in for a week.

Got set up, looks like a nice park BUT we can’t get Wi-Fi at our site. Have to go to the Clubhouse, which is a nuisance since it gets dark by 6:00 and I am not a fan of coming across a snake or ‘gator in the dark. The evening is when I have time to work on the Blog online, so I am doing it offline and will post when I get to the clubhouse.

Good thing is that the cable TV is good.

We went off to Will-Dixie for groceries.

Friday, January 18, Day of rest

It was very chilly when we got up this morning – cloudy and 8C (46.4F). Turned on the fireplace for some heat! Went for a walk around the park. It is a very windy day today. We just hung around the park for a ‘chill-out’ day, since I think all of our problems have been addressed, so far.......

Thursday, January 17, Quiet day

Sunny morning registering 18.5C (65F) today. Marcel continued washing the underside of the slides and discovered a bracket that had broken off.

After taking pic, of course, it was off to Home Depot to find self-tapping screws to re-attach it. The temp has increased to 25C (77F)

While there, we found a mini fridge that will replace the worn-out electronic cooler.

By the time we returned to the park after fuelling up, it has clouded over & cooled down. Intermittent light showers this afternoon, 16C (60.8F)

Wednesday, January 16, completing the circle

Looks to be another beautiful day! Puttered around this morning then decided to complte the circle drive. It is a comfortable, sunny 25C (77F).

At 11:00, we headed back up I-95 to SR 1A1 and east to Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach. Once past Fernandina, the road turns south & follows the coast for a lovely, scenic drive.

12:45 Quite by accident, we came across a ferry which would take us across St. John's River to Mayport - there is no bridge at this crossing. The ferry was just loading when we drove up! By taking the ferry, we continued on SR 1A1 south through Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach. Stopped at Pita Pit for a quick lunch in Jacksonville Beach, then went across the street for a walk on the beach.

Continuing south on Ponte Vedra Beach Blvd., which runs right along the coast, we passed many obscenely huge homes. There were also a few under construction $$$$$$$$$$$$$ Somebody has money! I Googled 'Ponte Verde Beach' and came up with real estate listings. Homes ranged in price from $1 million to $8 million!

By 2:45, we arrived in St. Augustine and the temp was 27C (80.6F). That was the end of the scenic drive, as it would be on to the Interstate for the return north. On the way to I-95, we came across  Camping World! Had to go in & look around.

On our return to the RV park, we discovered that the electronic cooler wasn't working! Guess it doesn't owe us anything, as we have had it for over 10 years!

Today's drive was a leisurely 235KM.

Tuesday, January 15 - off to the beach

Heard the first plane take off at 6:05 this morning. Looks like another beautiful day with the forecast calling for a high of 81F, again.

We went for a walk around the park & met the owners of the other Redwood in the park. Spent an hour talking to them.

At 10:45, the temp was 25C, so we changed into shorts & set off for Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach.
Enjoyed a walk along the beach, which consists of very fine, white sand peppered with lots of shells. I even ventured into the ocean, which was rather chilly!

We stopped for lunch at Sliders Seaside Grill where we sat outside and enjoyed a Shrimp Po'boy and iced tea.

                                                  Any buyers????
From there we continued on to Fort Clinch State Park, under a canopy of Live Oaks & Spanish Moss and stopped at a parking lot to get out for a walk.

After crossing the dunes on a boardwalk, we arrived at the beach.  Shell collecting is excellent on the beaches and avid shark tooth hunters will have plenty of sand to cover in their search.

We also came across several "Cannonball" jellyfish that had been left behind as the tide receded.cannonball jellyfish | Stomolophus meleagris
There is a fishing pier extending 1/2 mile out into the ocean which we walked on. The fishermen were not having much luck today!

From there we drove through the rest of the park to the Fort. Fort Clinch is a 19th century masonry coastal fortification located on a peninsula near the northernmost point of Amelia Island, along the Amelia River, in Nassau County, Florida. The fort lies at the entrance to the Cumberland Sound and within Fort Clinch State Park.

By this time, it was getting late, so we made our way back to the RV park instead of completing the 'circle tour' that we had planned.

Monday, Jan 14, 2013

First plane took off this morning at 5:53am!

Beautiful morning! Marcel was busy washing the truck & trailer while I did laundry.
Went for a walk up & down the roads of the park - 3.4km total.

Back to work on the kitchen tap. Finally took it apart, pulled out the flex hose & discovered it was blocked by gunk! After cleaning it out, we have full pressure! So much for "Quality control" and "PDI"!

Next thing to address was the Cable TV. After switching the cables in the rear of the wet box, the living room TV finally gets cable! However, still nothing on the bedroom TV.
It is another hot day +80F
After trying different cables and combinations, it was off to WalMart for a splitter and coax cable.
Finally, success! We have water & cable! Life is good. Oh, the A/C works great too!

Sunday, Jan 13, 2013

Oh, did I mention that we are just south of the Jacksonville International Airport and the planes take off & land right over us! There is a US Air Force base also and we see F-14s taking off & landing every day. They are fast & noisy!

We have a lovely sitewith a level concrete pad.

There is a Flea Market calling my name right next door! Had to go & check it out. Typical Flea market stuff......
Next, we went to Publix (grocery) and WalMart to stock up on groceries.

After some checking out the plumbing in the kitchen, it was off to Lowe's for some plumbing supplies.
Turns out the water pressure is good at the supply point, which means that the problem must be in the tap itself. Hmmmmmmm. Tomorrow is another day.

Saturday, Jan 12, 2013

We went for an early morning walk to check out the access to the fuel station. Looks good for "big rigs" which is important.
After fuelling up, we were on the road at 9:00 under blue skies and 22C.
By 11:15, the temp was 24C, but it was a lot warmer inside fron the sun coming through the windshield. Turned on the A/C!
At 11:45, we entered Florida, where the temp is 26C. Time to doff the winter coat!
We arrived at Pecan Park RV Resort at 2:20, where the temp registered 80F. Lovely park with concrete pads & spacious sites.
Then the fun begins! After hooking up the water, there was minimal water pressure coming from the taps. Troubleshooting found dirt plugging the screen filter in te bathroom tap. Toilet works well & the shower has great pressure. The kitchen tap just dribbles.
Unpacked and put away 5 boxes of supplies. More troubleshooting tomorrow.

Friday, Jan 11, 2013

Looks like it rained all night. We were on the road at 8:45.
By 10:30 it was still raining, but the temp has gone up to 13C and there is no more snow to be seen!
11:30, entered Tennessee, 18C
At 2:50pm we stopped at the Welcome Centre in Georgia where it was a cloudy 21C.
Went through Atlanta on I-75 and it has stopped raining.
At 6:30, arrived at the Super 8 in Macon - 827km today! Had leftover pizza for supper........

Thursday, Jan 10, 2013

Back to Redwood, all items completed. Hooked up & on the road towards Fort Wayne. The temp is 3C and the road is clear & dry.
After a few feeble attempts, it finally started raining in earnest while travelling on Hwy 9.
At 2:00, we turned on to I-74 east and it is still raining.
Continued on through Ohio, then into Kentucky. Stopped at the Super 8 motel in Dry Ridge, Kentucky, still raining. Pizza Hut for supper then an early night. 465km today.

January 9, 2013 Syracuse, Indiana

After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, we arrived at Redwood RV, only to find out that they found the trailer in the parking lot, moved it inside and were already working on it!

We left them to do their thing, and went for a drive to Elkhart, to visit the RV/MH Hall of Fame www.rvmhhalloffame.org . It was a fascinating look at the history of RV'ing over the years. This is the smallest Airstream built.

From there, we went to Shipshewana, where there is a huge Flea Market. It is only open from May - October however. We had lunch there and since this is Amish country, there were many, many horse & buggies travelling the road.

It is a beautiful, sunny day, the temp has gone up to +7C and the ice sculptures are melting.

Back to Syracuse and Redwood RV for a tour of the manufacturing facility. It was interesting to see the production line, which answered some questions we had about the location of some of the equipment.

January 8, 2013 Syracuse, Indiana

By 8:35, we were packed up & on our way to Hitch'n Go RV in Delhi, to pick up the trailer. Looks like a beautiful, sunny day with a temperature of -3C this morning.

We arrived at Delhi at 9:45, fuelled up and went to pick up the trailer.

All's well, the rear view camera works great and we were back on the road by 10:30, heading to Sarnia.

The roads are clear & dry, temp +1C and virtually no traffic. Great drive!

Cleared customs in a flash and continued on I-69 towards Lansing. By the time we entered Indiana at 4:45pm, there was only a dusting of snow around and the temperature was +4C. Can't complain about that!

It was dark when we arrived at the Redwood RV manufacturing plant at 6:05pm, so we just dropped off the trailer in the lot and continued on to the Brook Pointe Inn to check in.

Long day, now we can relax a bit.

January 7, 2013. Back on the road

We packed up the truck this morning, said our goodbyes to the neighbours and set off on the "long" drive to Matt & Carrie's in Mississauga.
After a stop in Alliston to visit my friend and former boss, Ro, we made it to Matt's at 5:30.
Enjoyed a great evening with the grandsons then will be heading south in the morning.
