The Superstition Mountains are richly steeped in history. Some of that history has been dipped in blood. Mexican miners and local Apache had not been getting along. Things came to a head in 1848 when the miners were attempting to remove an amount of gold. The Apaches pinned them down against a rock wall and the Mexican miners died there at a place that came to be known as Massacre Grounds. Once again, gold and blood soaked the soil.
We think we found the trailhead, which is unmarked.
Turned out it wasn't the trailhead. We had to bushwhack through back country, picking our way around "jumping cholla" cactus, which attaches to anything coming close! I picked up 3 of the very picky cactus balls on my shoe & sock.
After almost an hour, we were finally on the trail!
There were several interesting rock formations along the way....Thought this looked like a buffalo bison.
We finally found our way back to the car a shorter way, then went back to Mike & Diane's where we enjoyed a delicious shrimp & scallop dinner. Had a great "farewell" evening, as we will be leaving Mesa & going to Lake Havasu City tomorrow.
